Kindergarteners will be involved with AR practice testing during the year. First graders will practice test for the first nine weeks.
Accelerated Reader rewards for the first, third and nine weeks are planned by grade level teachers. Rewards for the second nine weeks and the yearly goal are planned and funded by the Media Center from book fair profits. They are as follows: an animal program at the end of second nine weeks and a surprise adventure program at the end of the year. To qualify for the yearly goal, students must reach at least three of their four nine week goals.
The media center sponsors a Media's Marvelous Reader program for students who read beyond their AR goals each nine week period: 20% over the point goal for his or her grade level while reading in the top quarter of his or her reading zone. The names of students who reach these goals each nine weeks will be entered for a drawing held at the end of the school year. The winner will receive a $100 gift card.

Mrs. Wilkins - Media Specialist
Meet Our Media Center Specialist
Since 1999, I have served as Sharp Creek Elementary's media specialist. Prior to coming to SCE, I worked for nine years as a media specialist in Alabama. I attended Emory University’s School of Library and Information Management. Prior to earning my media degree, I taught English and speech classes on both high school and college levels. My love of books and reading and my belief that reading is the key to academic success from Pre K through high school led to my desire to become a media specialist.
. My family includes my husband Bobby, three sons, and a Spitz named Cleeo. My hobbies include reading, photography, and travel.

Welcome to Sharp Creek Elementary Media Center
The media center offers a variety of informational resources to provide appropriate, timely services to all pre-k through fifth grade students and staff on an as-needed basis. The focus of media center policies and procedures is to support the successful implementation of the instructional program. The book collection supports the Accelerated Reader program with identified titles for reading levels kindergarten through fifth grades. Four computerized search stations are available for student research, and two computers are utilized for circulation and administrative purposes. Pre-K and kindergarten classes visit the media center weekly for story time and skill instruction. Grades 3-5 students research classroom assignments, using print and computer resources. The media center offers curriculum-related enrichment activities through visiting authors and illustrators, musicians, speakers and exhibits. A student may check out two books at a time on an as-needed basis. Parents may check out books as requested.
School announcments are broadcast throughout the building each morning from the media center, using fourth and fifth news team members selected by their classroom teachers. Parents and family are invited to observe the broadcast, which begins each day at 7:50.
Volunteers
Volunteers help to provide a quality media program for Sharp Creek students, and we welcome them in the media center. Volunteers assist the circulation desk during heavy lunch time traffic, shelve books and perform other duties as needed. Volunteers are also needed to help students with Accelerated Reader testing in the classroom.
Interested in volunteering for the media center? Contact our parent volunteer coordinator Iresa Mandall, media specialist Sharon Wilkins, or media clerk Susan Rice. |
